Jakob Samuel Weibel , called Samuel (born on November 28, 1771 in Bern ; died on November 24, 1846 there ), was a Swiss minor master , painter and engraver . His work focused on the cantons of Bern , Vaud and Valais as well as on Savoy .

biography

Jakob Samuel Weibel, son of a plasterer, was of humble origin. He pursued an artistic career and began an apprenticeship with Sigmund Freudenberger . He worked closely with Balthasar Anton Dunker , 25 years his senior , from whom he learned the art of etching . In 1792 the young Weibel developed his predilection for “landscape in art”, drew, engraved and colored his first artist's prints, in 1796 he published fourteen views of the Bernese Oberland with Emanuel Hortin in Bern.

In 1793 Weibel set out on his discovery of the Vaud region in order to depict a wide variety of landscapes, which led to his views of the castle of Saint-Maurice (1793) and Villeneuves (1795), among others . He traveled around Lake Geneva, where he worked in the Valais and Savoy ( Evian , Meillerie , Saint-Gingolph ). He is particularly known for his views of 254 parsonages in the cantons of Bern, Friborg , Solothurn and the Vaud. A series of eighteen images of Bernese castles also comes from him.

Several Swiss small masters settled in Vevey , such as Michel-Vincent Brandoin († 1790), whose studio was taken over by Pierre Samuel Louis Joyeux and Karl Franz Xaver Wexelberg. In 1797 Wexelberg had to withdraw to Lausanne by order of the authorities from Vevey . It was probably Weibel who replaced Joyeux for a while in order to paint the large canvases signed “Joyeux / Wexelberg”. Weibel stayed in Vevey between 1804 and 1817, and this stay was interspersed with many trips.

In Paris in 1805 he published the Principes d'après nature en 24 planches, pour apprendre à dessiner le paysage d'une manière sûre et facile, dessinées et gravées par S. Weibel («Principles of nature in 24 tables to learn how the landscape is drawn, drawn and engraved by S. Weibel in a safe and simple way »). The catalog of his engraved works contains 681 numbers. Weibel died in Bern on November 24, 1846.
