Yakov Alexandrovich Malik
Yakov Malik ( Russian Яков Александрович Малик , born November 23 . Jul / 6. December 1906 greg. In Ostrowerchowka at Zmiiv , Kharkov Governorate ; † 11. February 1980 in Moscow ) was a Soviet diplomat and politician .
Life
Malik grew up in a farming family. In 1931 he graduated from the Institute of Economics in Kharkov and then worked for the Komsomol . After graduating from the Institute for Diplomatic and Consular Service at the People's Commissariat for Foreign Affairs of the USSR in Moscow, he worked in the diplomatic service from 1937. From 1937 to 1939 he was initially an advisor and then deputy head of the press department of the People's Commissariat for Foreign Affairs. From 1939 to 1942 he was counselor in Tokyo , then from 1942 to 1945 Soviet ambassador to Japan . In 1945/46 he was the Soviet adviser to the Allied Control Council for Japan . From 1946 to 1953 he was Deputy Soviet Foreign Minister .
From 1948 to 1953 he simultaneously represented the Soviet Union at the United Nations and on the UN Security Council . Between 1953 and 1960 he was ambassador to the United Kingdom . From 1960 to 1980 he was again Deputy Foreign Minister. In the period from 1968 to 1976 he was again active as Permanent Representative of the USSR to the UN and the Security Council, at times also as President of the latter.
Malik was one of the most important diplomats of his time and was involved in major diplomatic disputes, such as the Korean War and the Western Sahara conflict . The Jessup-Malik agreement he signed ended the Berlin blockade .
Malik had been a member of the CPSU since 1938 and a candidate for the Central Committee from 1952 to 1961 .
Malik was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. He was awarded three orders of Lenin .
