James Hannen, Baron Hannen PC FRS (born March 19, 1821 in Peckham ; † March 29, 1894 in London ) was a British lawyer who was last as Lord of Appeal in Ordinary due to the Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876 as a life peer also member of the House of Lords was.

Life

After attending St Paul's School , Hannen, the son of a London businessman , studied law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and after graduating in 1848 he was admitted to the bar ( Inns of Court ) of Middle Temple . He then began working as a barrister and worked in 1863 as a legal advisor to the Treasury ( Treasury ).

In 1868 he switched to the judicial service and served as a judge at the then civil court of England ( Court of Queen's Bench ) until 1872 . At the same time he was beaten to Knight Bachelor in 1868 and has since had the suffix "Sir". He also became serjeant-at-law in 1868. After completing his work at the Court of Queen's Bench, he was between November 14, 1872 and its dissolution on November 1, 1875, succeeding James Wilde as a judge at the Court of Probate and at the same time a judge at the Court of Divorce and Marriage Court and Matrimonial Causes ). As such he became Privy Councilor in 1872 .

Following Hannen was, in 1878, also known as "Bencher" the Bar Association of the Middle Temple, was the first president of wills, divorce and Admiralty Division (on November 1, 1875 Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Division ) at the newly founded and for England and Wales competent High Court of Justice and held this judicial office until 1891. During this time he was also chairman of the so-called Parnell Commission in 1888 , a commission of inquiry that dealt with allegations against the politician Charles Stewart Parnell and ultimately led to his rehabilitation.

Most recently, Hannen, who also became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1891 , became a member of the House of as a life peer with the title Baron Hannen , of Burdock in the County of Sussex, through a letters patent dated January 29, 1891 based on the Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876 Lords appointed to the nobility and worked as lord judge until 1893 ( Lord of Appeal in Ordinary ). As such, in 1892 he was also an arbitrator in matters relating to seal hunting in the Bering Sea .

His younger brother Nicholas John Hannen was also a lawyer and among others from 1891 to 1900 President of the UK Supreme Court for China and Japan ( British Supreme Court for China and Japan ) and at the same time from 1891 to 1897 Head of the Consulate General in Shanghai . His son Nicholas Hannen was a well-known actor who appeared in numerous films between 1931 and 1962 such as Heinrich V (1944), Quo vadis? (1951) and Richard III. (1955) contributed.
