James Howard Kunstler (born October 19, 1948 , New York City , New York ) is an American author , civilization critic , speaker and blogger . Kunstler's partly apocalyptic cultural criticism is one of the foundations of New Urbanism in the USA.

Kunstler comes from a Jewish family. The parents divorced when he was eight years old. His father was in the diamond trade and his stepfather was a screenwriter on Broadway after their parents' early divorce . The small town idylls featured in many of his books take up aspects of summer vacation camps in New New Hampshire . He graduated from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts High School of Music & Art in 1966 and received a major in theater studies from the State University of New York at Brockport .

Kunstler initially worked for Rolling Stone magazine, among others . From 1975 he worked as a freelance writer in Saratoga Springs . He was temporarily married to the author Jennifer Armstrong .

Positions

In the sense of a secular millenarianism , Kunstler is particularly known for apocalyptic conclusions from the global oil production maximum . In the run-up to the Year 2000 problem , however, he had already made a number of predictions that were viewed as exaggerated in retrospect. He has been heavily criticized in some cases for his pro-Israel stance in the Middle East conflict .
