James Riley Holt Hutchison, 1st Baronet DSO TD ( April 10, 1893 , † February 24, 1979 ) was a Scottish politician and officer.

Life

Hutchison was born in 1893 as the eldest son of Thomas Holt Hutchison and his wife Florence Riley . He attended Stanmore Park School and Harrow School in London and then moved to the Kelvinside Academy in Glasgow . Hutchison embarked on a military career. During World War I he was used with the Lanarkshire Yeomanry and Indian Cavalry in France and was accepted into the Legion of Honor with the rank of knight. He was also awarded the Croix de guerre .

Between 1918 and 1933, Hutchison was director of the Ailsa Shipbuilding Company in Troon . On March 1, 1920, he married Dorothy Joan Surtees . The marriage, which was divorced in 1922, remained childless. In 1928, Hutchison was awarded the Territorial Decoration . In the same year he married his second wife Winefryde Eleanor Mary Craft . The marriage resulted in two children, Jancis (1929–1999) and Peter (* 1935). Even in the Second World War Hutchison was used in France. In 1945 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his services . On January 26, 1956, he was given the hereditary title of Baronet , of Rossie in the County of Perth .

Political career

Since 1923 the Unionist William Alexander held the lower house mandate of the constituency of Glasgow Central . Alexander did not run for the general election in 1945 . Instead, his party colleague Hutchison ran for the constituency's mandate. His main opponent was the Labor politician James McInnes , against whom he was able to prevail on election day and subsequently moved into the British lower house for the first time. By the next general election in 1950 , the political mood had changed and Hutchison was defeated this time by the Labor candidate and initially left the lower house.

In the neighboring constituency of Glasgow Scotstoun , MP Arthur Stewart Leslie Young died just a few months after the election. For this reason, by-elections were held in October 1950 in the constituency, to which Young's party colleague Hutchison ran. Contrary to the political mood, he held the constituency for the unionists. In the following general election in 1951 and 1955 , Hutchison held his mandate. To the elections in 1959 , he has not raced for more. The mandate went to Labor candidate William Watson Small , who would hold it until the constituency was abolished in 1974.
