William Alexander (politician, 1874)

Sir William Alexander KBE CB CMG DSO (born May 4, 1874 in Glasgow , † December 29, 1954 ) was a Scottish politician and brigadier general .

Life

Alexander was born in 1874. He embarked on a military career and rose to the rank of brigadier general. As a result of his work, Alexander has received several awards. He was holder of the Order of the British Empire with the rank of Knight Commander , member of the Order of the Bath as Companion , holder of the Order of St. Michael and St. George as holder of the rank of Companion and holder of the Distinguished Service Order .

Political career

Since 1918, Unionist and Prime Minister Andrew Bonar Law held the lower house mandate of the Glasgow Central constituency . At the general election in 1923 Law did not appear to. Instead, his party colleague Alexander applied for the constituency's mandate. His opponents were the Labor politician Edward Rosslyn Mitchell and the liberal Harold Tennant . On election day, Alexander prevailed against the Labor candidate with a majority of only 416 votes and entered the British lower house for the first time . In the following elections, Alexander defended his mandate against various Labor politicians; 1924 against James Dundas White , 1929 against Craigie Aitchison , 1931 against William Henry Porteous Martin and 1935 against RR Stokes . In the general election in 1945 Alexander did not run and he resigned from the House of Commons. His party colleague James Hutchison won the election .
