James Robert Perch (born September 28, 1985 in Mansfield ) is an English football player who has been under contract with Mansfield Town in Football League Two since 2020 .

Club career

Nottingham Forest

James Perch learned to play football at the Nottingham Forest Youth Academy . In 2003 he signed his first professional contract with Forest and reached 14th place in the Football League First Division in his first season with the Reds . The following season in the newly introduced Football League Championship ended disappointingly, Perch had to relegate to Football League One with the club . In the following two seasons, Perch earned a regular place in the defense of the Reds. The flexible defensive all-rounder played both in the position of central defender, in full defense and in defensive midfield.

While the 2005/06 season was finished in seventh place and Forest just missed the playoff games, succeeded in the following season with fourth place in the playoffs. In these, Perch and Forest were narrowly defeated by Yeovil Town . The 2007/08 season ended Perch, who continued to act as a regular in the defense, with the Reds in second place and after three years managed to return to the championship. It was followed by a difficult 2008/09 season , in which Perch had to fight for a long time with Nottingham for relegation, which ultimately succeeded with 19th place. In the Football League Championship 2009/10 he was only able to contribute to a good season of Nottingham Forest at the end of the season. By then, Perch had missed most of the games due to injury. His team reached a third place in the table, but missed promotion in the first playoff round by two defeats against the later promoted Blackpool FC .

Newcastle United

On July 5, 2010, Nottingham Forest announced that James Perch had signed a 4-year contract with newly promoted Premier League Newcastle United . In the 2010/11 Premier League , he played 13 league games for his new club. He then established himself as a regular player and got 25 league appearances in 2011/12 . At the end of the season Newcastle was on a UEFA Europa League place. In the following season, Perch finally established himself as a regular player. In the Europa League they were eliminated in the quarterfinals against Benfica Lisbon . In the league they only finished in midfield this time.

Wigan Athletic

After the unsuccessful season Perch moved to the EFL Championship to Wigan Athletic . In its first season you played in the Europa League . There he played four out of six possible games. Wigan was eliminated in the group stage against SV Zulte Waregem , NK Maribor and Rubin Kazan . In the league you could qualify for the playoffs for the Premier League, but where Perch's team failed in the first round despite a goal from him just about the Queens Park Rangers . Queens Park Rangers

Perch then moved to the Queens Park Rangers , back in the championship. There, too, he had a firmly planned place in the external defense . At the end of its debut season, QPR finished in midfield. In 2016/17 he didn't play that often anymore. QPR also slipped a bit and ended up way down in the table. In 2017/18 , Perch only played seven times in the entire season, despite no injuries.

Scunthorpe United

Because of this, he moved to Scunthorpe United in the summer of 2018 . In EFL League One he got 41 appearances in his first season and was able to score two goals. After the season, Scunthorpe was relegated and was fourth class . Despite the relegation, Perch stayed with the fourth division. In his second season at Scunthorpe, he played 30 times and scored one goal. At the end of the season his team was also at the bottom of the table in league four.

Mansfield Town

After the season he moved to Mansfield Town , the direct table neighbors from the previous year at Scunthorpe.
