James Stewart of Beath

Sir James Stewart of Beath (* before 1513 - † June 2, 1544 in Dunblane , Perthshire ) was a Scottish nobleman .

He came from a branch of the Stewart family . He was the youngest son of Andrew Stewart, 1st Lord Avondale from his marriage to Margaret Kennedy, daughter of John Kennedy, 2nd Lord Kennedy .

He owned the estate of Beath in Ayrshire and was administrator ( Commendator ) of the Abbey of Saint Colme's Inch in Fifeshire .

After his brother Henry Stewart, 1st Lord Methven , Margaret Tudor , the widow of King Jacob IV and mother of King Jacob V had married, his sister-in-law appointed him in 1528 as captain and constable of Doune Castle . In the following years he also held the court office of gentleman of the bedchamber for Jacob V and was lieutenant of his bodyguard.

After Queen Mary I had appointed him as steward of Menteith in Perthshire, he was murdered on White Sunday 1544 in Dunblane by members of the Edmondstone of Duntreath family , who had previously held this office.

In 1533 at the latest he had married Margaret Lindsay, widow of Richard Stewart, 3rd Lord Innermeath , and daughter of John Lindsay, 3rd Lord Lindsay . With her he had three sons and three daughters:

  • Henry Stewart ⚭ 1567 Elizabeth Robertson;
  • James Stewart, 1st Lord Doune (around 1529–1590) ⚭ Lady Margaret Campbell;
  • Archibald Stewart († after 1578), Provost of Edinburgh;
  • Elizabeth Stewart ⚭ 1558 Sir Robert Crichton of Eliock;
  • Marjory Stewart, ⚭ (1) James Ross of Craighton, ⚭ (2) John Lindsay of Dowhill;
  • Margaret Stewart ⚭ 1554 James Ogilvie of Balfour.
