Jan-Otmar Hesse

Jan-Otmar Hesse (born February 6, 1968 in Göttingen ) is a German economic historian .

Jan-Otmar Hesse did community service from 1987 to 1989. From 1989 to 1995 he studied history, economics, political science and film and television studies at the Ruhr University in Bochum . His academic teacher was Dietmar Petzina . Hesse received her doctorate in 1999 in Bochum at Petzina with a thesis on the history of the Reichspost and telegraph administration from 1876 to 1914. From 1997 to 2000, Hesse received a doctoral scholarship from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation . From 2000 to 2008 Hesse was a research assistant at the history seminar of the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main with Werner Plumpe . In 2005/2006 he was a fellow at the German Historical Institute in Washington DC. His habilitation took place in 2007 in Frankfurt am Main with a thesis on the history of science on economics in the early Federal Republic. From April 2008 to September 2010 he was Hartmut Berghoff's deputy professor for economic and social history at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . From October 2010 to March 2015, Hesse taught as a professor for general history, particularly economic history, at Bielefeld University . In 2014 he accepted a call to the University of Bayreuth for a newly established W3 professorship for economic and social history. He has been teaching there since April 2015.

His main research interests are corporate history, media history and the history of economics. For his dissertation on the corporate history of the Reichspost, he was awarded the Corporate History Prize in 2001 by the Society for Corporate History . In his habilitation, published in 2010, the focus is on the development of economics as an academic subject. In 2013, Hesse published the introduction to economic history. Origin and change of the modern economy . In 2014, an introduction to the history of the global economic crisis , written together with Werner Plumpe and Roman Köster, followed . Hesse has been a member of the Association of Historians in Germany since 2008 . Since 2011 he has been on the scientific advisory board of the Society for Company History. He has been a full member of the Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 2017 .
