Jan Baszkiewicz

Jan Michał Baszkiewicz (born January 3, 1930 in Warsaw ; † January 27, 2011 ) was a Polish legal scholar , historian and university professor who dealt in particular with legal history and the history of France .

biography

After attending school, Baszkiewicz began studying law at the University of Warsaw in 1951 and, after completing his studies, earned a doctorate in law in 1955 . He then became a lecturer at the Polska Akademia Nauk (PAN), the Polish Academy of Sciences, in 1956 , where he was appointed associate professor in 1965 and full professor in 1972.

In addition, he accepted a professorship at the University of Breslau as early as 1959 , before moving to the newly founded Silesian University in Katowice in 1968 . In 1973 he finally became professor and head of the Department of the History of Political Doctrines of the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science at the University of Warsaw.

In addition, Baszkiewicz first became a Corresponding Member in 1986, then in 1994 a member of the Polska Akademia Nauk and was also a member of the Warsaw Scientific Society and a member of the editorial board of the monthly Państwo i Prawo (State and Law) and the semi-annual Czasopisma Prawno-Historycznego (Legal-Historical Journal) . He was also a member of the program committee of Polski Przegląd Dyplomatyczny , a bimonthly magazine for international affairs.

As a university lecturer, he dealt with the history of political thought, the state and law, shifting his focus over time from the history of the Middle Ages to the history of France and in particular the French Revolution . As a recognized expert on the history of France, he and Stefan Meller advised the director Andrzej Wajda on his film Danton (1983).

He was buried in the Evangelical Reformed Cemetery in Warsaw.
