Jan Ekström (born October 11, 1937 ) is a former Swedish football player . The offensive player ran five times for the Swedish national team between 1956 and 1957 .

Career

Ekström made his debut in 1955 as a junior player in the first team of Malmö FF in the Allsvenskan . After he had contributed to the runner-up in the 1955/56 season through good performances , the national team's selection committee - which was headed by MFF chairman Eric Persson at the time - nominated him in May 1956 for an international match against the English national team as a substitute for the injured Nils-Åke Sandell . In the 0-0 draw in Råsunda , he made his debut in the national jersey at the age of 18 alongside Kalle Svensson , Sven Axbom , Gösta Sandberg , Bengt Lindskog and Gösta Löfgren .

While Ekström established himself with the club in the upper part of the table, he initially stayed parallel in the national team. In his second international match, he scored his first international goal on the occasion of the 3-1 success over the Finnish national team. After he made his fifth international appearance in November 1957, he was part of the provisional squad of the selection committee for the 1958 World Cup . Ultimately, he and Torbjörn Jonsson were removed from the squad and replaced by a third goalkeeper and an experienced professional player.

After the end of the season 1960 Ekström left Malmö FF and moved together with his teammate Lennart "Lill-Kick" Svensson to the third division IFK Hässleholm , with whom he missed promotion to the second division. He then joined the second division Sandvikens IF , with whom he played for promotion to Allsvenskan. By the end of the season of the 1962 season, the club had a duel with IFK Eskilstuna for the relay win, and only on the last day of the match did the competitor outstrip the club from Gästrikland , who missed promotion to runner-up in the table despite 37 of 44 possible points.

In 1964 Ekström returned to Malmö FF. There, however, Lars Granström and Bo Larsson had meanwhile occupied the regular places in the storm, so that he switched to other playing positions. In 1966, after a total of 222 games for the men's team, he ended his active career at the Skåne club. He later worked as a trainer in the lower division at Harlösa IF , BK Fram , BK Flagg , Kulladals FF and Barrikaden , and as a youth trainer at Malmö FF. He was also responsible for "MFF: s Guldlag", the club's former team.

Ekström worked full-time as an electrician.
