Jan Koukal (politician)
Jan Koukal (born July 29, 1951 in Brno ) is a Czech politician and diplomat .
After studying theoretical physics at Charles University in Prague (1969–1974), Koukal, who received his doctorate, worked at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences until 1993, specializing in surface and solid state physics .
Jan Koukal became a member of the Democratic Citizens Party (ODS). From 1993 to 1998 he was the Lord Mayor of Prague and from 1996 to 1998 a member of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic . In 2006, after a few months of training in the Foreign Office, he became the Czech ambassador to Austria . He resigned from this office in 2013, and was succeeded by Jan Sechter .
Koukal is married and has three children.
