Jan Mühlstein

Jan Mühlstein (born July 3, 1949 in Most , Czechoslovakia ) is a German journalist and association functionary of organizations of Reform Judaism . From 1999 to 2011 he was chairman of the Union of Progressive Jews in Germany .

Life

Mühlstein grew up in a German-speaking Jewish family that traditionally represented liberal Judaism . In 1967 he began studying physics at Charles University in Prague . After the crackdown on the reform movement called the Prague Spring , in which Mühlstein actively participated, he emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1969. From 1970 he studied physics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and received his doctorate in theoretical quantum optics in 1977 . He then worked for four years in the energy research project management at the Jülich nuclear research facility . From 1982 until he retired in June 2016, Mühlstein worked as a business journalist in Munich and was deputy editor-in-chief of the energy industry journal Energie & Management (E&M).

From 1977 to 1978, Mühlstein was a member of the board of directors of the German section of Amnesty International . He is co-founder of the liberal Jewish community Beth Shalom in Munich, of which he was chairman from 1995 to 2005 and from May 2011 to March 2019. Since May 2020 he has been chairman of the board of the Beth Shalom Synagogue Foundation. From 1999 to 2011 he was chairman of the Union of Progressive Jews in Germany. He particularly advocated religious plurality within the Jewish community.

Mühlstein is married to the doctor Verena Mühlstein (* 1953), author of a biography about Albert Schweitzer's wife Helene Bresslau and also active in Beth Shalom. One of his three daughters was ordained a rabbi in London in July 2012.
