Janet Elizabeth "Jan" McFarlane (born 1964 in Stoke-on-Trent , Staffordshire ) is a British Anglican theologian . She has been Bishop of Repton in the Diocese of Derby in the Church of England since 2016 .

Life

McFarlane was born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. Her parents were not religious or churchgoers. She attended Blythe Bridge High School, a state secondary school , in Blythe Bridge , near Stoke-on-Trent. After finishing school, she studied Medical Science at the University of Sheffield with the aim of becoming a speech therapist . Her subjects included anatomy , physiology , linguistics, and child psychology . In 1987 she graduated with a Bachelor of Medical Science (BMedSci) from the University of Sheffield. She then worked as a speech therapist and speech therapist at the National Health Service , specializing in working with deaf children; during this time she lived in North Staffordshire .

McFarlane came to the Church and the Faith through contact with friends. She attended church services and eventually led a youth group in the community. She then studied theology at St John's College, University of Durham , where she graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in theology. In preparation for her priesthood she attended Cranmer Hall College in Durham , an evangelical ("open evangelical") theological college of the Anglican Church.

In 1993 she was ordained a deacon ; In 1994 she was ordained a priest . She was one of the first women in the Church of England to be ordained priestesses in 1994. Their priests career began from 1993 to 1996 in the diocese of Lichfeld as vicar ( Curate ) at the Christ Church in Lichfield . From 1996 to 1999 she was chaplain (Chaplain) and auxiliary canon (Minor Canon) at Ely Cathedral . In 1999 she became Director of Communications in the Diocese of Norwich. From 2001 to 2009 she was the local chaplain (Chaplain) of Graham James , the Bishop of Norwich .

In 2009 she became archdeacon ( Archdeacon ; head of a church district) of Norwich. On March 15, 2009, she was officially established as archdeacon at Norwich Cathedral . When she was appointed archdeacon, McFarlane was one of only nine women in that office out of a total of 112 archdeacons in the Church of England. She has also been diocesan representative in the General Synod of the Church of England since 2005. McFarlane campaigned intensively for the ordination of women in the Anglican Church.

On February 26, 2016, her appointment as Suffragan Bishop of Repton was officially announced. She succeeds Humphrey Southern , who became Principal of Ripon College in Cuddesdon in April 2015. Jan McFarlane was ordained bishop by Justin Welby , Archbishop of Canterbury , on June 29, 2016 in London, together with Jo Wells , Suffragan Bishop of Dorking .

She also works as a preacher on local radio stations.

Personal

Jan McFarlane is married to cameraman Andrew Ridoutt; he works for television . Her hobbies include trips to the countryside and the beach , going to country pubs, and walking her dog, a miniature schnauzer .

In February 2014, McFarlane was diagnosed with breast cancer; she had to undergo surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy . McFarlane dealt aggressively with her illness; she reported on her illness in the Eastern Daily Press and appeared in public without a headscarf and wig after the hair loss resulting from the treatment.

Jan McFarlane has written theological books in the Reflections series at Church House Publishing , a. a. Pocket Prayers of Blessing (2012) and Pocket Prayers for Advent and Christmas (2009).
