Jo Wells

Jo Bailey Wells (* 1965 as Jo Bailey ) is a British Anglican theologian . On March 24, 2016, her appointment as Bishop of Dorking in the Diocese of Guildford in the Church of England was announced.

Life

Jo Wells, born Bailey , studied at Corpus Christi College of the University of Cambridge and the University of Minnesota . In preparation for her priesthood, she attended Cranmer Hall College in Durham , an evangelical ("open evangelical") theological college of the Anglican Church, which is affiliated with St. John's College, Durham.

In 1995 she was ordained a deacon ; In 1996 she was ordained a priest . From 1995 to 2001 she worked as a Chaplain ( Chaplain ) at Clare College, University of Cambridge. From 1998 to 2001 she was Dean of Clare College . From 2001 to 2005 she was a lecturer on the Old Testament and Biblical Theology at Ridley Hall College , Cambridge , an Anglican theological college. As a “pastoral tutor”, she was responsible for pastoral care as well as teaching. From 2005 to 2012 she was associate professor for subjects "Bible and Ministry" at Duke Divinity School of Duke University in North Carolina and Director ( Director ) of the local Anglican Episcopal House of Studies.

Upon her return to the UK she was in February 2013 Hauskaplanin ( Chaplain ) of the Archbishop of Canterbury , Justin Welby at Lambeth Palace, the archbishop's official residence. Her first task as chaplain was to carry the bishop's cross at the solemn enthronement of Welby in Canterbury Cathedral in March 2013. Her duties included pastoral care at Lambeth Palace, and others. a. by founding the community of Anselm von Anselmus (Community of St Anselm) in Lambeth Palace, also supporting Welby in episcopal and pastoral tasks. Together with Welby she took part in the reburial of Richard III. in March 2015 and attended the christening of Prince George and Princess Charlotte . Since 2015 she also worked as Kanonikerin ( Canon Theologian ) at the Liverpool Cathedral .

On March 24, 2016, her appointment as suffragan bishop of Dorking was officially announced. She succeeds Ian Brackley , who retired on September 30, 2015. Jo Wells and Jan McFarlane , Suffragan Bishop of Repton, will be ordained bishop in London on June 29, 2016 by Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury. Her official assumption of office in the Diocese of Guildford is scheduled for August 2016.

Wells is the author of two theological books God's Holy People (Sheffield University Press, 2000) and Isaiah: A Devotional Commentary for Study and Preaching (Bible Reading Fellowship Oxford, 2006).

Personal

Wells is married to the Anglican theologian and pastor ( Vicar ) Sam Wells , who works at St Martin-in-the-Fields Church in London ; they have two children together, a son and a daughter. Wells' personal interests include art , architecture, and textiles (fabrics).

For many years, Wells has spent her vacations and free time in East Africa , particularly in Sudan , where she supports the Episcopal Church of South Sudan and Sudan and Archbishop Daniel Deng Bul Yak .
