Jan Persson

Jan Persson (born July 22, 1943 in Copenhagen ; † November 15, 2018 ) was a Danish photographer who was best known as a concert photographer .

Live and act

Persson has worked as a photo reporter in and around Copenhagen for Danish newspapers and magazines since 1962 . Very early on he began to regularly photograph concerts, in addition to those with American jazz stars as well as those from traveling beat and rock music groups . His photos were printed by Danish newspapers such as Politiken , Berlingske or Ekstra Bladet as well as in the specialist magazines Jazz Special , Melody Maker or Down Beat . They also appeared on the covers or supplements of more than 1000 LPs or CDs.

Persson published Af jazzens billedbog with his own pictures together with Børge Roger-Henrichsen as early as 1965 , which was followed in 1996 by his photo book Jazz Portraits . In 2008 he presented the band Midt i en Beattid ("The World's Greatest Rock Stars in Denmark 1964-74") with Torben Bille, and in 2011 the book Musical Portraits with Mia Fuglsang Holm . Since 1990 he has also exhibited his photos in numerous solo exhibitions, including at Jazzahead in 2014 .

His pictures were also used in the biographies of Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen , Erik Moseholm and in other Danish jazz books as well as in Images of the Blues (by Lee Tanner & Lee Hildebrand, 1998). Over 15,000 of his recordings are stored in the research archive of Aalborg University .

In 2004 Persson was awarded the Ben Webster Prize . JazzDanmark honored him in 2009 with the Jazzformidlerpris (The Jazz Communicator Award). In 2014 he received the jazzahead! Škoda Award in Bremen.

Persson died in November 2018 at the age of 75 from complications from cancer.
