Jan Zábrana

Jan Zábrana (born June 4, 1931 in Herálec , † September 3, 1984 in Prague ) was a Czech writer , poet and translator .

Life

Zábrana spent his youth in Herálec. Since his mother was arrested for political reasons in 1949, he was not allowed to enroll in philosophy at Charles University after graduating from high school in 1950 . Therefore he studied for four semesters Catholic theology at the theological faculty. In 1951 his father was also arrested for political reasons. Both parents were not pardoned until 1960 by way of an amnesty.

In 1954 Zábrana started working as a translator. He translated poetry and prose from Russian and English. He also wrote poetry and wrote detective novels with Josef Škvorecký . In 1957 he published a volume of poetry.
