Janusz Andrzej Zajdel (born August 15, 1938 in Warsaw , † July 19, 1985 there ) was a Polish writer . He is one of the most important science fiction authors in Poland.

Life

Zajdel studied physics at the Mathematical-Physical Faculty of the University of Warsaw , then he worked in a laboratory as a nuclear physicist in the field of radiation protection. At the beginning of the 1980s he was one of the founders of the Solidarność Association in his factory.

Zajdel made his debut as a writer with the novella Tau Wieloryba , which was published in the magazine Młody Technik . He later published over 50 short stories.

His first novel, Lalande 21185 , he published in 1966, Prawo do powrotu in 1975. His novel Cylinder van Troffa was published in 1980. A totalitarian society was described in the book, later the main theme of Zajdel's works. This sub-genre, which he founded in the Polish science fiction literature, found numerous imitators such as Andrzej Krzepkowski , Marek Oramus and Maciej Parowski .

Zajdel's works have been translated into numerous foreign languages, including German , English and Russian . In 1973 he was awarded the Magnum Trophaeum for his novels published in Młody Technik . In 1980 a prize from the Ministry of Culture for Cylinder van Troffa followed , and in 1984 Złota Sepulka for Wyjście z cienia . In the same year he received the Sfinks Prize for the novel Paradyzja ; after Zajdel's death, the prize was renamed the Janusz A. Zajdel Prize .
