description

The Japanese wild apple is a shrub-like, densely branched tree that reaches heights of 6 to 8 meters. Due to the overhanging branches, the crown is broadly arched. Annual shoots have dense hairs. The leaves are light green, 4 to 8 inches long, ovate to lanceolate and often lobed. The edge is sawn in the upper third. In autumn the leaves turn orange-red. The flowers arise from the deep red buds of the long shoots. They have a diameter of 3 centimeters and are pale pink. The fruits are yellow with red cheeks. Their stems are 4 inches long and thin. They hang on the tree for a long time.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

Importance in fruit growing

The Japanese wild apple is resistant to apple scab , a common pest of the cultivated apple . Since the late 20th century, attempts have been made in Europe and North America to cross the wild apple with the cultivated apple in order to obtain scab-resistant varieties of the cultivated apple. The varieties that emerged are, for example, Florina , Ahrista , Retina , Ecolette , Pilot , Reglindis and Reanda . Today, topaz , rosana , rubinola , santana and otava are particularly common .
