Jay E. Adams

Jay Edward Adams (born January 30, 1929 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American Evangelical Reformed theologian, psychologist, pastor, speaker and author with a focus on pastoral care who has written more than 100 books.

Life

Adams studied Greek at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and theology at Reformed Episcopal Seminary in Pennsylvania , and he earned a bachelor's degree in both courses. He received his Masters in Theology from Andrew W. Blackwood at the Homiletic Seminary of the Theological School of Temple University in Philadelphia . He received his doctorate in theology from the University of Missouri at Columbia, Missouri . He worked at the Pittsburgh Xenia Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh and received a post-doc fellowship with O. Hobart Mowrer in psychology at the University of Illinois in Illinois .

Adams then ministered to Presbyterian and Reformed churches in western Pennsylvania and New Jersey , where he was also ordained as a pastor. Then he was a teacher at the University of Missouri at Columbia for three years. 1963-1983 he taught homiletics, pastoral care and practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in the Philadelphia area . He founded the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation in Laverock and edited the journal Pastoral Practice . He was President of the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors and Director of Advanced Studies at Westminster Theological Seminary in Escondido , California .

He lived for his cause - a pastoral care based on the Bible - he wrote many books and spoke at conferences around the world.

Adams is married to Betty Jane, they have four children and live in Woodruff, near Spartanburg , South Carolina .
