Édouard Jean-Baptiste Milhaud (born July 10, 1766 in Arpajon-sur-Cère , † January 8, 1833 in Aurillac ) was a French Général de division .

Life

Milhaud received his 1789 officer's commission and was 1791 commander of the National Guard of Aurillac selected. On July 1792 he served as captain in a unit of hunters on horseback . He joined the Montagnards and regularly attended the Jacobin Club . In January 1793 he voted at the trial of King Louis XVI. for his execution. From May 1793 he acted as a representative of the Convention in the Ardennes army and from August 19 in the Rhine Army. He was transferred to the army in the eastern Pyrenees in the autumn of 1794 and, under General Dugommier and his party colleague de Soubrany, as a member of the military committee of the Convention, restored order to the troops there. After Robespierre's death , he returned to Paris in July. On December 26, 1795 he was promoted to Chef de brigade and appointed commander of the 5th e régiment de dragons in the Armée d'Italie . In September 1796 his troops were used in the battle of Bassano .

In 1805 he fought as Général de brigade first with the corps of Prince Murat , occupied Linz on November 1 and pursued the enemy to the village of Astern the next day. From November 14th he led Marshal Davout's avant-garde , pursued the Austrians via Wolkersdorf to Brno and took part in the battle of Austerlitz . On October 28, 1806 he forced the 6,000 men of the division of the Prince of Hohenlohe to surrender and was promoted to Général de division on December 30 of the same year . He took part in the battle of Eylau . For his services, Napoleon made him count on March 10, 1808 .

From 1808 to 1812 he took part in the campaign in Spain. On November 19, he dispersed a Spanish militia battalion near Valverde and defeated the guerrillas under Empecinado. At the end of March 1809, after the battle of Ciudad Real , he pursued the enemy over the Sierra Morena to Almagro. On November 18, 1809, he was attacked by the Spanish avant-garde during the Battle of Ocaña , but vigorously rejected them and was able to capture a large part of the Spanish artillery after Soult's counterattack. In the campaign of 1813 he commanded the 6th Heavy Cavalry Division in the 5th Cavalry Corps (General Pajol) and took part in the Battle of Leipzig . Based on his experience with this type of weapon, Milhaud was appointed Inspector General of the Cavalry in 1814.

During the reign of the Hundred Days he rejoined Napoleon. In the battle of Ligny on June 16, 1815, he and his cuirassier division broke through the center of the Prussian army and secured Napoleon's last partial success. In the following Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815, he distinguished himself by his fearless cavalry attacks.

After the second restoration, Milhaud was elected by King Louis XVIII for his loyalty to Napoleon . banished. After the July Revolution of 1830 he was called back to France, but died on January 8, 1833.
