Frappa was a son of the painter José Frappa , who had moved with his family from Saint-Étienne to Paris shortly before the birth of his son . Frappa spent his school days at the Collège Sainte-Croix in Neuilly-sur-Seine and at the Lycée Janson de Sailly ( Rue de la Pompe , Paris).

During his school days, Frappa tried to work as a freelancer to find his first small essays and reports in newspapers and magazines. He later got jobs at La Presse , Le Monde illustré and Le Matin, one after the other . The editors of Femina magazine noticed him and hired him as editor-in-chief.

At the beginning of World War I, Frappa volunteered for the army. He fought in the 11th Corps of the Armée française d'Orient under the leadership of General Maurice Sarrail .

Jean-José Frappa died in Paris in 1939 and found his final resting place on the Cimetière de Boulogne-Billancourt .
