Jean-Michel Grandmont

Jean-Michel Grandmont (born December 22, 1939 in Toulouse ) is a French economist .

Career, research and teaching

Grandmont studied engineering from 1960 at the Paris École polytechnique before moving to the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in 1962 . There he graduated in 1965. He then went to study in the United States . At the University of California, Berkeley , he completed his Ph.D. in 1971 under the guidance of Gérard Debreu . -Degree in economics . After completing his studies, Grandmont initially returned to Paris and did research for the CNRS . In 1972 he moved to the Université catholique de Louvain , where he did research at the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics headed by Jacques Drèze .

In 1977, Grandmont returned to the École polytechnique as an Associate Professor , and three years later he went to ENSAE . Between 1982 and 1986 he was also an associate professor at EHESS . In 1992 he was appointed full professor at the École polytechnique. Between 1996 and 2000 he was head of the university's economics department.

From 1970 Grandmont was involved in research at the CNRS. There he worked in various areas of responsibility and was Director de Recherches from 1987 . Since 1996 he has also been director of the Committee for Scientific and Technical Research . He has also been a member of the European Economic Association since 1986 and an honorary member of the American Economic Association since 1989 . Between 1992 and 1999 he was a member of the 15-member Executive Committee of the International Economic Association , and in 1990 he was President of the Econometric Society . In 1992 he was awarded the Gay Lussac Humboldt Prize and elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Since 1989 he has been a full member of the Academia Europaea .

Grandmont's work is particularly dedicated to monetary theory , general equilibrium theory , sunspot theory in business cycles and the microeconomic foundations of macroeconomics. In doing so, he analyzed the possibilities and characteristics of economic equilibrium based on the description using mathematical methods and models. He worked with Kenneth Arrow and Werner Hildenbrand , among others .
