Jean-Yves Lechevallier , [ʒɑ̃ iv ləʃəvæljeɪ] (* 1946 in Rouen , France ), is a French sculptor and painter.

In 1977 he was the winner of the art competition Flame of Europe , which was organized by the Robert Schuman Foundation for Europe on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome (1957). The project is supported by Jean Monnet .

The sculpture was inaugurated by the President of the Senate, Alain Poher, in the presence of Otto von Habsburg .

Life

Lechevallier grew up as the son of an architect - surrounded by plans, drawings and models.

He created his first known sculpture from a stone he found while on vacation in Les Baux-de-Provence . At the age of fifteen he presented his first solo exhibition of hand-carved animal sculptures made from Provencal stone in the Prigent Gallery in Rouen.

In 1966 he received his first assignment from the city architect and planner Robert Louard, a friend of the family who was responsible for the construction of a new neighborhood on the island of Île Lacroix in Rouen.

He studied at the École régionale des beaux-arts de Rouen and the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs (ENSAD) in Paris .

In his first job he worked as a model maker for the architect Badani.

Artistic work

Jean Yves Lechevallier is influenced by the Franco-German artist, sculptor and poet Hans Arp . This is especially true of his nature-related representations in sculpture and in his sculptures.

Lechevallier creates reliefs, high reliefs, murals, mosaics, caryatids and monumental sculptures. His preferred materials are precious woods, stones and marble; Metals such as copper, aluminum, bronze, or stainless steel; Polyester and concrete, which is sometimes reinforced with fibers. Lechevallier's material requirements motivated a cement manufacturer to register a special mixture (cridofibre) as a brand.

Thanks to the French cultural policy in the post-war period, Lechevallier received subsidized grants and commissions from the state (city or state governments). His works are therefore now part of some architectural landscapes in France , especially in Normandy , Paris and on the Côte d'Azur . Lechevallier's art objects can be found in everyday places such as public gardens and squares, schools, fire brigade and police stations, universities, residential complexes and preserved natural areas such as the “Croix des Gardes” (forest park above the city of Cannes ).

Lechevallier specializes in monumental outdoor sculptures. Corinne Schuler says in Sentiers de la Sculpture : "By forcing art into confined spaces, you lose so much of its beauty", T: "The more you try to force art into closed spaces, the more it will lose its beauty."

Another Lechevallier specialty is fountains. He loves water, which enlivens a sculpture through its movement and sound.
