Jean Baptiste Broebes (also Broëbes) (* around 1660 in Paris , † after 1720 in Barby ) was a French engraver and architect who worked in Bremen and Prussia .

Life

Jean Baptiste Broebes studied fortress and civil architecture in France and trained as a copper engraver with Jean Marot and François Chauveau in Paris. He had to leave the country as a Huguenot in 1685 and was employed as a council architect in Bremen from 1686. Here he drafted the plans for the Weser Bridge Gate and the old stock exchange on the Liebfrauenkirchhof in the Baroque style . In Bremen he met with criticism for this style, which was still unusual here. He entered service in Brandenburg in 1692. As a chief engineer in Pillau (1692–1697), he was involved in the renovation of Schlobitten Castle . After his appointment to Berlin in 1699, he taught at the Academy of Arts as a professor of military and civil architecture. A few years after his call to Barby in 1720, where he was to take over the completion of the castle that had begun in 1687, he died.

Broebes' main work is the collection of views of all the city palaces, pleasure palaces and royal palaces that existed in Berlin, Potsdam and the surrounding area at the turn of the 17th to the 18th century , which was commissioned for the Brandenburg elector and later Prussian King Friedrich I. . These 52 sheets of Vues des Palais et Maisons de Plaisance de SM le Roy de Prusse were published posthumously in 1733 in the art trade of Johann Georg Merz in Augsburg . As an executive architect, Broebes achieved hardly any importance.
