Jean Baptiste Guth
Jean Baptiste Guth (born January 4, 1855 in Paris , † 1922 ) was a French illustrator and caricaturist . Its activity is documented from 1875 to 1921.
Life and works
In 1875 he was admitted to study painting at the École des beaux-arts in Paris, where he attended the painting class of Jean-Léon Gérôme . From 1882 he worked, possibly on the recommendation of Louis Charles Auguste Steinheil , for Félix Gaudin , for whom he drew cardboard boxes for church windows.
The Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal has a representation of Gustave Eiffel and his tower from around 1890, which was printed by Léon Henri Ruffé.
From 1884 to 1920 Guth's works were published in the magazine L'Illustration ; the issue of February 7, 1891 contains a double-sided portrait of the painter Joseph Meissonnier, engraved by Henry Thiriat .
From 1889 to 1908 he worked for the English magazine Vanity Fair . Jean Baptiste Guth signed his drawings of well-known personalities, mostly caricatures, with his last name "GUTH". He created, among other things, portraits of Queen Victoria and Vice Admiral Leonce Albert Caillard , who commanded the French fleet during the Tangier crisis , of Anatole France and Alfred Dreyfus . Guth mostly worked with pastel and water colors ; his pictures were reproduced lithographically . The Vanity Fair images were printed by Vincent Brooks Day & Son.
