Jean Preudhomme or Preud'ho (m) me or Prudhomme (baptized November 23, 1732 in Rolle ; buried July 20, 1795 in La Neuveville ) was a Swiss painter.

life and work

Jean Preudhomme studied in Paris with the famous painters Jean Baptiste Leprince and Jean-Baptiste Greuze . Preudhomme worked as a genre and landscape painter, as a portraitist and animal painter. He also worked as a draftsman. However, his specialty was portraiture . In Switzerland he worked mainly in Geneva , Lausanne , Neuchâtel and Bern . From 1782 to 1786 he was referred to in a Swiss publication as a “portraitist à la mode”. Works, especially portraits by this painter, are rarely offered in stores.

The collection of the National Museums of Scotland contains the painting from 1774: Portrait of Douglas, 8th Duke of Hamilton , on his Grand Tour with his Physician Dr John Moore and the Latter's son John . In the background of this painting you can see the city of Geneva , where Preudhomme painted the painting. The Duke of Hamilton and his companions lived in Geneva for two years.

In 1789 Preudhomme made a portrait of Friedrich Wilhelm II . The portrait is in the Musée d'art et d'histoire in Neuchâtel. Preudhomme presumably used a life-size portrait of the king as a template for the portrait, which the governor of Béville had given the city of Neuchâtel in 1788 for the new town hall.

The Rath Museum has a portrait of a woman by Preudhomme.
