Jean Séguy (born May 3, 1925 in Duras , Lot-et-Garonne , † November 9, 2007 in Liancourt , France ) was a French sociologist of religion and researcher of the Anabaptists , Mennonites , Adventists and other dissident Christian movements.

Life

Jean Séguy was born in Duras in 1925 . He came from a Catholic family of southwestern French origin. After working as a language teacher in England and Egypt for several years , he came to Paris , where he studied religious studies at the École pratique des hautes études . In 1956 he published a book about the sects in France ( Les sectes protestantes dans la France contemporaine ). From 1960 he worked at the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). His main research area remained the religious nonconformists and dissident movements of Protestantism and Catholicism. In 1970 he received his doctorate at the Sorbonne with a thesis on the Anabaptist movement in France, which he published in 1977 under the title Les assemblées anabaptistes-mennonites de France (904 pages).

In addition to his research on the history of religion, he worked intensively on the sociology of religion. He was strongly influenced by Max Weber and Ernst Troeltsch and made their work in the sociology of religion well known in the French-speaking area. He wrote countless articles for the magazine Archives de sciences sociales des religions (ASSR) , of which he was director from 1981 to 1988. He was also an active contributor to the magazine Christ Seul , the monthly magazine of the French Mennonites . As a member of the French Mennonite History Association ( Association française d'histoire anabaptistemennonite ), he was one of the defining figures in scientific Mennonite research in France.
