Jean Wyllys de Matos Santos (born March 10, 1974 in Alagoinhas , Bahia ) is a Brazilian politician , author and journalist .

Life

Wyllys graduated from the Faculty of Communication at the Universidade Federal da Bahia with a Masters degree in Literature and Linguistics. After his studies he got a job as a university lecturer at the Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing (ESPM) and then at the Universidade Veiga de Almeida (UVA) in Brazil. He wrote columns for the Correio da Bahia and has been publishing his crônicas in book form since 2001 .

In 2005 Wyllys took part in the fifth Brazilian edition of the Big Brother Brasil (BBB5) program on the Rede Globo television channel and won it. This made him famous nationwide. He is a member of the left-wing party Partido Socialismo e Liberdade (PSOL). As a member of the State of Rio de Janeiro , he was a member of the Brazilian National Congress in Brasília from February 2011 to January 2019 . His positions basically correspond to the politically left spectrum. He was a strong advocate for the diversity and political rights of minorities in Brazil, including the right to same-sex marriage and the right to abortion . Wyllys sees the War on Drugs as a historical injustice of the global North against Latin America, which is why he called for the liberalization of at least some drugs such as marijuana . He also advocated the admission of refugees, as well as campaigning for quotas in the allocation of public positions based on gender and ancestry. In 2016 he discussed the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff with the then MP Jair Bolsonaro . Wyllys voted against Rousseff's impeachment, Bolsonaro in favor. After the vote there was an argument that ended with Wyllys spitting in Bolsonaro's face.

Wyllys was openly gay in Brazil. On March 14, 2018, the city councilor of Rio de Janeiro who was friends with Wyllys, Marielle Franco , an openly lesbian, black and left-wing politician, was murdered on the street. After increasing death threats against him and later his family - he was announced in emails that he would be next - he left the country in January 2019. He resigned his mandate and handed it over to the also openly homosexual MP David Miranda . Many rumors and fake news circulated about the transfer of his mandate to Miranda . Wyllys said he would report the politician and journalist Ratinho for spreading fake news. Wyllys initially gave no information about his whereabouts and stayed in Europe, including Madrid. At a performance in Portugal he was pelted with eggs, further specifically planned attacks against him could be prevented.

Wyllys announced in spring 2019 that he would settle in Berlin at the invitation of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation . Since March 2019, Wyllys has been regularly commenting on Brazilian politics in a blog from his exile.
