Career

Van den Berg made his debut at the Elfstedentocht, the most important natural ice long-distance race in speed skating, in 1947. He won the next race in 1954 in a record time of 7 hours and 35 minutes, which his compatriot Evert van Benthem only won in 1985 undercut. In 1956 he finished sixth, eight minutes behind a group of five who had crossed the finish line together, which is why the race was not officially rated. In 1956 in Cortina d'Ampezzo , he finished 24th over the 5000 m distance . 1960 in Squaw Valley it was over 5000 m to 19th place and 10,000 m to 22nd place. In 1973, at the age of 44, he became the first Dutch master in marathon skating.
