Jehangir Sabavala

Jehangir Ardeshir Sabavala (born August 23, 1922 in Bombay , † September 2, 2011 in Mumbai ) was an Indian painter .

life and work

Sabavala came from a wealthy Parish family. He attended Sir JJ School of Art and graduated there in 1944. He then went to Europe and studied from 1945 to 1947 at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London . Here he met his future wife, who studied at the London School of Economics . From 1948 to 1951 Sabavala lived in Paris , from 1953 to 1954 he attended the Académie Julian and finally in 1957 the Académie de la Grande Chaumière .

During his artistic career, Sabavala had over 30 solo exhibitions in and outside India. Most recently, the exhibitions Jehangir Sabavala: A Retrospective at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai and New Delhi (2005-2006), as well as exhibitions at the Sakshi Gallery in Mumbai (2008) and at the Aicon Gallery in New York City (2009 ) to see.

As part of group exhibitions, some of his works were shown in 2004 in the Jehangir Nicholson Collection in Mumbai, also in 2004 in Mumbai in The Search and in 2005 in the exhibition Trends and Techniques-Water Color in India at Galerie 88 in Calcutta .

Sabavala was married and had a daughter (* 1959). On September 2, 2011, he died of lung cancer after a long illness . When asked about possible influences of his Zoroastrian origins on his art, Sabavala described it as "intuitive" with reference to the meaning of light in his work. "

Honors

Sabavala received the Padma Shri in 1977 . Arun Khopkar's film Colors of Absence about Sabavala won a National Film Award in 1994 . In 2007 Sabavala got the Lalit Kala Ratna . Other awards include the Dadabhai Naoroji Millennium Award , the Kala Ratna of the All-India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, and the Monegasque Grand Prix de la Peinture .
