Jehoshafat Harkabi ( Hebrew יהושפט הרכבי; * September 21, 1921 in Haifa ; † August 26, 1994 in Jerusalem ) was an Israeli political scientist , officer ( major general ), military theorist and former head of the Aman military intelligence service .

Life

Harkabi studied philosophy , Arabic literature, and history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . After receiving his doctorate in Jerusalem, he joined the British Army Jewish Brigade in 1943 and took part in World War II . He was then a soldier in the Israel Defense Forces ; used as a liaison officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Defense. As a company commander he was involved in the Israeli War of Independence . In 1950 he became deputy director and from 1955 to 1959 he served with the rank of major general as head of the Israeli military intelligence service Aman . He subsequently earned a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University . In 1962 he was deputy office manager of the Israeli prime minister. In 1963 he became head of strategy research at the Israel Defense Ministry.

After his military service, he was also visiting professor at Princeton University and visiting professor at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC From 1978 to 1989, he was Maurice B. Hexter Professor of International Relations (previously he was a senior lecturer and associate professor) and from 1983 to 1989 Director of the Leonard Davis Institute of International Relations and Middle East Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. For many years he was an advisor and private secretary to Moshe Sharet , Shimon Peres , Jitzchak Rabin and Menachem Begin, as well as the author of more than 20 security policy papers.

Harkabi was seen as a proponent of the state of Palestine and advocated recognition of the PLO as a negotiating partner.

Harkabi was married and had two children.
