Jens Napaattooq [ jɛns naˈpaːˌtːɔːq ] (according to the old spelling Jens Napãtôĸ ; born June 5, 1966 in Ittoqqortoormiit ) is a Greenlandic politician ( Partii Naleraq ).

Life

Jens Napaattooq was trained as a demolition manager , but worked as a kiosk owner .

He ran for the first time in 1995 for the Inuit Ataqatigiit in the Inatsisartut election , where he received more than half of all valid votes in his constituency with 128 votes. At 28 he was the youngest elected member of the electoral term, but the electoral review committee declared him ineligible after inspecting the criminal record , whereupon the party asked him to resign and his representative Evald Brønlund took over the parliamentary seat. Jens Napaattooq had previously been sentenced to prison terms twice. He was convicted for the first time in 1986 on twenty counts of theft, threats, insulting officials and firearms abuse, among other things. He had shot at a police station, among other things. He was eventually paroled but committed five new offenses including assault, threats, firearms abuse and vandalism when he and friends shot down all the street lights in Ittoqqortoormiit. The evaluation of the electoral review committee met with criticism from both the population and the judiciary. A collection of signatures revealed that the majority of the citizens of Ittoqqortoormiit saw it as undemocratic that a democratically elected politician was denied office. However, Jens Napaattooq accepted the decision and decided to focus on local politics.

He ran for the Siumut in 1997 in the local elections and received 72 votes, making him mayor of the municipality of Ittoqqortoormiit . At the age of 30, he was also the youngest mayor of Greenland. After the parliamentary elections in 1999 , he was also able to move into Inatsisartut. He emerged as mayor again from the 2001 local elections and remained in office until 2004, when he was appointed Minister for Housing and Infrastructure in Naalakkersuisut .

He was removed from office the following year after it became known that he had embezzled approximately DKK 128,000 in taxpayers' money by eating out or going to strip clubs. In 2007 he was sentenced to four months in prison for this.

In the following years he worked as a store manager in Upernavik . He returned to politics in the 2018 parliamentary election and was able to win another seat in the Inatsisartut at 128, this time for the Partii Naleraq. The electoral review committee became active again, but declared it eligible.

He has two children with his wife Margrethe Vetterlain (* 2007, 2013).
