Ittoqqortoormiit has been a district in eastern Greenland since 2009 .

location

The district of Ittoqqortoormiit is in the east of Greenland. In the north it borders on the Northeast Greenland National Park , in the south on the Ammassalik district .

history

When Greenland was settled, a settlement stream from which the Tunumiit emerged moved across the north coast to East Greenland and from there to the south. The current district of Ittoqqortoormiit was therefore also temporarily inhabited and the remains of past settlements were later discovered in the area. In 1822 the British navigator William Scoresby mapped the area. The name of the fjord and thus the Danish name of the city Ittoqqortoormiit go back to him.

In 1911 the area was first considered to be repopulated because Ammassalik was growing rapidly. After Norway laid claim to East Greenland, the implementation of the plan was decided in 1916, but could not be implemented for financial reasons. After several years of disputes, a second East Greenland colony was finally established in 1924.

In addition to Ittoqqortoormiit, the three residential areas Uunarteq , Itterajivit and Innakajik were also founded. The Kangikajik residential area came in 1944 , while Innakajik was given up in the same year. In 1947 Kangersittuaq was settled. In the mid-1950s, Kangikajik and Kangersittuaq were abandoned.

It was not until 1963 that the colony district became Ittoqqortoormiit municipality, ten years after the decolonization of West Greenland.

With the establishment of the Northeast Greenland National Park on May 22, 1974 about north of the latitude 71 ° North, the approximately 700,000 km² and practically uninhabited part in the north (only three stations with an occupation of less than 30 people) was removed from the community.

In 1985 Nerlerit Inaat Airport was privately built and has been state-operated since 1990. It is located in an uninhabited area 38 km northwest of Ittoqqortoormiit.

Uunarteq and Itterajivit have been abandoned since the 2000s.

During the administrative reform in 2009, the municipality Ittoqqortoormiit was incorporated into the Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq and became a district.

places

Besides the town of Ittoqqortoormiit there are no more inhabited villages in the district today.

In addition, the following abandoned settlements are in what is now the district area:
