from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jens Weitkamp (born June 5, 1942 in Paris ; † August 25, 2019 there ) was a German chemist and professor emeritus at the University of Stuttgart .

academic career

Jens Weitkamp studied chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe and the Free University of Berlin . In 1971 he did his doctorate under Helmut Pichler ; the habilitation followed in 1981 with Kurt Hedden . In 1986 he became a professor at the University of Oldenburg . In 1988 he accepted an appointment at the University of Stuttgart , where he became head of the Institute for Chemical Technology. He retired in October 2008. He died after a serious illness on August 25, 2019 in his native Paris.

Services

Weitkamp's research focused on the use of zeolites for catalysis and adsorption in petroleum processing and petrochemicals . The topics he worked on in this context include reactions in petroleum processing such as cracking , hydrocracking , isomerization , alkylation and reforming as well as petrochemical work, and the like. a. for catalytic cleaning of diesel exhaust gases or for adsorptive material separation.

The jury of the Carl Engler Medal recognized his life's work in 2002 with the words: “Jens Weitkamp contributed to the fact that zeolites have attained today's technical importance. He worked on the zeolite area in all its breadth. "

Jens Weitkamp was the author or co-author of over 250 scientific articles as well as the author or editor of several books and book series. Together with Gerhard Ertl and Helmut Knözinger , he has published a five-volume encyclopedia on the subject of heterogeneous catalysis , the Handbook of Heterogeneous Catalysis . He was the founding editor of the journal Microporous and Mesoporous Materials .

Memberships, honors and awards

In 1976 Jens Weitkamp received the Carl Zerbe Prize from the German Scientific Society for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Coal (DGMK).

In the further course of his career he was active in numerous honorary posts, including as a board member of the DGMK (1991 to 2002) and DECHEMA , President of the International Zeolite Association (IZA), on the board of trustees of the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie and the scientific advisory board of the Max- Planck Institute for Coal Research . From 1997 to 2008 he was a member of the program committee for the World Petroleum Congresses (WPC).

In 2002 he became the founding rector of the private German University in Cairo . In the same year he was awarded the Carl Engler Medal by the DGMK . In 2003 the Saxon Academy of Sciences appointed him a corresponding member. DECHEMA awarded him the Alwin Mittasch Prize in 2009 .
