Helmut Knözinger (born July 10, 1935 in Weilheim in Oberbayern ; † January 12, 2014 ) was a German physicist and chemist .

Life

Knözinger studied physics at the University of Munich from 1953 to 1957 . In 1961 he received his doctorate in physical chemistry . From 1962 to 1967 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Physical Chemistry in Munich; In 1967 he completed his habilitation. From 1967 to 1971 he was a private lecturer, 1971 university lecturer and from 1973 adjunct professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. In 1980 he was offered a professorship for physical chemistry. He was visiting professor at the Universidad Central de Venezuela , Caracas (1968/69), the Xiamen University , Xiamen, PR China, (1985), the Northwestern University , Evanston, USA, (1988), the Universiteit van Amsterdam , Amsterdam, Netherlands, (1989) and several times at the Université Marie et Pierre Curie , Paris, (1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2003).

Together with Gerhard Ertl and Jens Weitkamp , he published a five-volume encyclopedia on the subject of "Heterogeneous Catalysis" ( Handbook of Heterogeneous Catalysis ), which has become a standard work in this field.
