Jerzy Łoś ( [ˈjɛʐɨ ˈwɔɕ] , born March 22, 1920 in Lwów ; † June 1, 1998 in Warsaw ) was a Polish mathematician and logician .

Life

The course started in 1937 at the Jan Kazimir University in Lwów ( Lemberg ) had to be interrupted due to the war. After the war, Łoś married and continued his studies at the Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin . With a degree in philosophy, he went to the University of Breslau as an assistant in 1947 , first at the chair for physics, then for logic. There he received his doctorate in 1949 with the dissertation " O matrycach logicznych " ( About logical matrices ). Six years later he completed his habilitation with two publications “ The algebraic treatment of the methodology of elementary deductive systems ” and “ On the extending of models ” at the Polish Academy of Sciences . He then moved to the University of Toruń , was appointed associate professor in 1957 and full professor three years later. He took part in the establishment of the Toruń Branch of the Polish Mathematical Society . In 1949 he joined the Polish Academy of Sciences and worked there in various sections until his retirement in 1991.

During stays in Berkeley , he worked with Alfred Tarski on model theory in 1959/60 and with Bjarni Jónsson on universal algebra in 1962/63 . This was followed by further stays abroad at the University of Aarhus in 1967, in Yale 1973 and at the University of Wisconsin – Madison 1978/79.

Łoś initially worked in model theory and algebra . The Łoś theorem on the validity of theorems in ultra-products , which led to a new proof of the compactness theorem , is associated with his name. After his time in Toruń from 1961, Łoś also carried out research in the fields of applied mathematics, in particular in business mathematics .

In 1964 Jerzy Łoś was made a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and in 1983 a full member. The University of Hagen honored Łoś in 1995 with an honorary doctorate.

In 1996 Łoś suffered a stroke from which he died in 1998.
