Jia Zhangke's films are characterized by an emphatic realism . He finds his subjects in the daily life of the semi-urban zones of China, where he brings the flipside of what the official Chinese cinema creates on the screen. His work is very popular in Europe, while he is largely unknown to the general public in his homeland.

In 2011 he was appointed jury president of the official Orizzonti section at the 68th Venice International Film Festival .

Jia has been married to Chinese actress Zhao Tao , who starred in several of his films, since 2012 .

In 2013 he received his third invitation to compete at the Cannes International Film Festival for Tian zhu ding . Using four people in four different provinces, the film documents the increasing violence that economic success brings with it in contemporary China.
