Jihad Battah

Youhanna Jihad Mtanos Battah (born June 26, 1956 in Damascus , Syria ) is a Syrian Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Damascus .

Life

Jihad Battah studied at the University of Saint-Esprit in Kaslik ( Lebanon ) and at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. He received on May 19, 1991 Archbishop Eustathe Joseph Mounayer the ordination for the archeparchy Damascus . Jihad Battah was director of the seminary of the Syrian Patriarchate of Charfé in Lebanon and was appointed rector of the Pontifical College of St. Ephrem in Rome in 2003 by the Congregation for the Eastern Churches . Most recently he was Protosynkellos ( Vicar General ) of the Archeparchy of Damascus.

The Holy Synod of the Syrian Catholic Church elected him Bishop of the Syrian Curia. Pope Benedict XVI agreed to the election, appointed Jihad Battah titular Bishop of Phaena on March 1, 2011 and appointed him Curia Bishop in the Patriarchate of Antioch in Lebanon . The Patriarch of Antioch, Ignatius Joseph III. Younan , ordained him episcopal on May 20, 2011 in St. Paul's Cathedral in Damascus ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Damascus, Gregorios Elias Tabé , the Archbishop of Homs , Théophile Georges Kassab , the Archbishop Emeritus of Mosul , Basile Georges Casmoussa , and Denys Raboula Antoine Beylouni , Curia Bishop emeritus in the Patriarchate of Antioch.

On June 22, 2019, he was elected Archbishop of Damascus.
