Jill Cornell Tarter (born January 16, 1944 ) is an American astronomer and was director of the SETI Research Center until 2012 . She holds the Bernard M. Oliver Chair of SETI at the SETI Institute .

Tarter received her college degree at Cornell University and in 1975 her Ph. D. (doctorate) in astronomy at the University of California to work Interaction of Gas and Galaxies within galaxy clusters . She worked on numerous large scientific projects, mostly in connection with the search for extraterrestrial life . During her postgraduate studies , she took part in the SERENDIP project , which searched the universe for radio waves. In 1992 and 1993 she was a project scientist for NASA's High Resolution Microwave Survey (HRMS) and then director of the Phoenix project (a new version of the HRMS) under the auspices of the SETI Institute. In 2002, together with Margaret Turnbull , she designed the HabCat catalog (Catalog of Nearby Habitable Systems, HabCat ), which was one of the most important components in the Phoenix project. Until 2012 she headed the institute's Center for SETI Research .

Tarter published dozens of extensive technical papers and lectures. These included the topics of extraterrestrial intelligence and the need for adequate scientific training. Through her work in the field of astrobiology and her success as a female scientist, she has received numerous awards, including from Women in Aerospace and NASA . It won the Telluride Tech Festival Award of Technology in 2001. Tarter was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences in 2002. In 2004 she was on Time Magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World . In 2005 the asteroid (74824) Tarter was named after her. In 2014 she holds the Karl G. Jansky Lecture .

The character Samantha Crowe in Frank Schätzing's novel The Swarm is also heavily based on Tarter.
