James Barrett "Jim" Galanes (born August 28, 1956 in Brattleboro , Vermont ) is a former American cross-country skier and Nordic combined athlete .

Galanes took part in the Nordic combined at the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck in 1976 . After jumps from the normal hill and a 15 km cross-country skiing, he finished the competition in 17th place.

Then Galanes appeared as a cross-country skier at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid . His best result in a single race was 20th place over 50 kilometers. With his relay colleagues Tim Caldwell , Stan Dunklee and Bill Koch , he finished 8th. In Oslo Galanes competed in the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1982, the race over 30 km in freestyle technique. He finished the competition 14th. At the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo in 1984 , Galanes reached places 36 and 31 respectively over 30 and 50 kilometers. The relay with Dan Simoneau , Caldwell and Koch again took 8th place. Between 1982 and 1985 Galanes achieved four placements in the top ten and three national championship titles in the World Cup.

After his sporting career, Galanes worked as a trainer and civil engineer. From 1986 to 1992 he coached the US national team and until 1995 was the head coach of the Nordic disciplines at Stratton Mountain School in Stratton (Vermont) . From 1995 to 2006 he worked as a ski trainer at Alaska Pacific University . He also founded Jim Galanes Consulting , a civil engineering company that advises on land use and land planning issues.

Galanes was married to the cross-country skier Lynn von der Heide-Spencer-Galanes . His brother Joe Galanes was also active as a cross-country skier.
