James "Jim" Gerlach (born February 25, 1955 in Ellwood City , Lawrence County , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . From 2003 to 2015 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jim Gerlach attended Dickinson College in Carlisle until 1980 , where he studied law, among other things. After being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1991 and 1994 he was an MP in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives ; from 1995 to 2002 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the 2002 congressional election , Gerlach was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Tim Holden , who moved to the 17th district, on January 3, 2003 . After five re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 2015. During this time, the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan took place . Gerlach was a member of the Committee on Ways and Means and two of its sub-committees. He was also a member of six Congressional Caucuses , including the International Conservation Caucus . In January 2011, he in turn founded the German-American Congressional Caucus , a group of congressmen dedicated to maintaining German-American relations.

In January 2014, he announced that he would not apply again in the 2014 election and would withdraw from politics. The Democrats saw the electoral district, which Mitt Romney narrowly won in 2012 with 51 percent of the vote, as an opportunity to take the seat. However, due to the victory of Ryan Costello over the Gerlach in 2010, Manan Trivedi remained in Republican hands.

Gerlach is married and has three children; privately he lives in West Pikeland .
