Life

In the years 1951 to 1954 he was runner- up four times , always behind fellow countrymen, first twice behind Richard Button , then twice behind Hayes Alan Jenkins . At the 1952 Olympics he won the bronze medal. Grogan was trained by Edi Scholdan at Broadmoor Arena in Colorado Springs .

After his resignation he worked on Arthur Wirtz's ice revue "Hollywood Ice Review" and from 1956 on Ice Capades. He served in the U.S. Army, with figure skating being part of his duty. His basic training was interrupted when Sonja Henie chose him to perform with her in Europe in front of the troops. In the 1960s Grogan became director of the James Grogan Skating School in Squaw Valley , after which he worked as a trainer in the USA and Japan. His students included Nobuo Satō , Midori Itō , Charles Tickner .

He was married to the Olympic champion and multiple world champion in pair skating, Barbara Wagner . The marriage ended in divorce.

Grogan died unexpectedly at the age of 68 from sudden multiple organ failure. He left behind his wife, Yasuko, and a son and daughter.
