history

The competition was launched in 2004 by the member broadcasters WNED-FM , WNED-TV of the non-commercial TV chain Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO). It was named in honor of the BPO's music director, JoAnn Falletta , who is also the competition's president. The JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition was the world's first concert competition for classical guitarists with the accompaniment of a full symphony orchestra . The artistic directors are Joanne Castellani and Michael Andriaccio (Castellani-Andriaccio Duo) and Donald K. Boswell (President and CEO of Western New York Public Broadcasting).

The winner of the competition will receive a cash prize of US $ 10,000 , a recording contract with Fleur de Son Classics, and will be able to perform in a concert with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

To date, there have only been three winners of the competition who have won all possible prizes (1st prize, the Musicians Favorite Award and the Audience Favorite Award ) at once: Marcin Dylla from Poland in 2004 , Marko Topchii from Ukraine in 2014 and the Russian in 2016 Anton Baranov.

regulate

  • The competition has been held every two years since 2004, always in Buffalo, New York State.
  • The participants have to play given and freely chosen pieces of music from memory.
  • The final of the competition will take place in the Kleinhans Music Hall , a national historical landmark with exquisite acoustics and a seating capacity of 2,839.
  • In addition to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the competition, there are three special prizes: the Audience Favorite Award , the Musicians Favorite Award and the William and Carol Greiner Award . While the Audience Favorite Award is a fairly common award in public music competitions, the Musicians Favorite Award represents the professional assessment of the competition participants by the orchestra members of the BPO. The William and Carol Greiner Award , which has been presented since 2018, is given to the participant who reaches the final round with a recently composed, lesser-known work from the repertoire list.
