from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Joachim (Jochen) "Jo" Ment (born October 30, 1923 in Hamburg ( Barmbek ); † October 2, 2002 in Hamburg) was a German band leader , composer , arranger , musician ( bandoneon , saxophone ) and the father of radio presenter John Ment .

life and work

Ment played the bandoneon from the age of eight and the clarinet from the age of eleven . He also completed a conservatory education in viola , clarinet and music history. In the 1950s Ment was a member of the Big Band of the North German Broadcasting Corporation , later contacts were made with Bert Kaempfert , James Last , Horst Wende ( Roberto Delgado ) and Ladi Geisler . For these and other artists he occasionally played during recordings, among other things he took part in the successful tours of the Continental Tango Orchestra of Alfred home . From the early 1980s until his death he was a permanent member of James Last's orchestra , where he impressively presented the bandoneon in solo titles. With load he succeeded among other things the single hit Biscaya 1981/82. On the bandoneon he also accompanied Franz-Josef Degenhardt on recordings in 1977 and 1990.

From 1956 to the end of the 1970s, Ment had its own orchestra, which initially only appeared at public events and parties and, since the late 1960s, has released around 50 LPs for the Ariola record company . The recordings were extremely varied; They ranged from current chart hits ( Tops for Dancing ) to popular pieces ( Loreley asks to dance ) to evergreens ( Golden Oldies for Dancing ). By marketing Jo Ment's Happy Sound , parallels to the happy party sound of colleague Last became clear. A collaboration also took place with the singer Rex Gildo ( Rex Gildo's Disco Club with Jo Ment's Happy Sound ). For many LP recordings he hired the so-called Happy Party Singers as well as several studio musicians from the orchestras of Bert Kaempfert, James Last and Kai Warner . Jo Ment died on October 2, 2002. He found his final resting place in the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg.
