Joachim Friedrich Martens (born December 19, 1806 in Hamburg ; † February 11, 1877 there ) was a Hamburg labor leader and member of parliament.

Life

Martens lost his parents at a young age and grew up in poor circumstances. At the age of 14 he began an apprenticeship as a carpenter, became a journeyman in 1826 and then went on a journey to Switzerland, Belgium, England and France, where he came into contact with radical craft associations. In Paris he met Ludwig Börne , Jacob Venedey and Wilhelm Weitling , was enthusiastic about their utopian socialism and became a member of the League of Outlaws and later of the League of the Just .

In 1843 he returned to Hamburg, initially working again as a journeyman and in 1849 founded a timber business which he ran until the end of his life. At the same time, he played a leading role in the Hamburg Union of the Just and in 1844/45, together with Georg Schirges, founded the educational association for workers , which was considered the most important workers' association in Hamburg until the 1860s . During the revolution of 1848/49 Martens was a member of the Hamburg Constituent Assembly and was arrested several times after the revolution failed.

In the following years he approached the ideas of Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch , he campaigned for the labor movement to merge with the liberal bourgeoisie and, above all, campaigned for the emerging cooperative movement . In 1858 he was one of the founders of an old age and disability fund for workers.

From 1859 to 1877 he belonged to the Hamburg citizenship and was considered a popular speaker. Since 1865 he was also a member of the standing committee of the Association of German Workers' Associations (VDAV). In 1868, the Hamburg workers 'education association, led by Martens, split off from the VDAV when it joined the international workers ' association.
