Forward! was the title of a German-language newspaper that was published in Paris from 1844 to 1845 , initially as a theater brochure by the Bureau Central pour l'Allemagne , and later, from July 1844, Karl Marx had a major influence on the editorial team.

It was published with the subtitle Paris Signals from Art, Science, Theater, Music, Literature and Social Life and was aimed on the one hand at German political emigrants in France and on the other hand at democratic oppositionists in Germany. It was founded by Heinrich Börnstein , financed by the composer Giacomo Meyerbeer and edited by Karl Ludwig Bernays . The forward! which appeared twice a week in an edition of about 1000 copies campaigned for democracy and attacked absolutism in the states of the German Confederation , especially Prussia . From July 3, 1844, the magazine was called " Vorwärts. Pariser Deutsche Zeitschrift ".

Marx and the Forward

The forward! was for Marx and Arnold Ruge the follow-up project to the Franco-German yearbooks that they had previously published together. Marx gave the new publication a clearly socialist tendency, which led to a break with Ruge after just a few months. The paper's attacks on its policy prompted the Prussian government to intervene in France in 1845 and - ultimately successfully - to pursue the expulsion of Marx.

Other employees

To the temporary employees of the Forward! belonged to Marx and Ruge u. a. Georg Weber , Karl Ludwig Bernays , Wilhelm Marr , Friedrich Engels , Georg Herwegh , Georg Weerth and Heinrich Heine . His weaver's song, for example, was published there on July 10, 1844 (No. 55) under the title “The poor weavers”; and between October 23 and November 30, 1844 Heine's verse satire became Germany. A winter fairy tale printed there.
