Joachim H. Ficker (2007)

Joachim Hans Ficker (born June 4, 1963 in Nuremberg ) is a German doctor and university professor specializing in pulmonology and sleep medicine . He is adjunct professor at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg , university professor at the Paracelsus Medical Private University in Nuremberg and medical director of the Clinic for Pneumology at the Nuremberg Clinic , University Clinic of the Paracelsus Medical Private University. Ficker is known for his scientific work in the fields of sleep-related breathing disorders , chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) , emphysema and lung cancer .

Life

After studying medicine, doctorate and habilitation at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Ficker was appointed chief physician at the Clinic for Pneumology, Allergology and Sleep Medicine (Medical Clinic 3) at the Nuremberg Clinic in 2003. In 2005 he was appointed adjunct professor at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg and in 2014 he was appointed university professor at the Paracelsus Medical University in Nuremberg.

Ficker also heads the Lung Tumor Center Nuremberg, which is accredited by the German Cancer Society (DKG) , and the Nuremberg Sleep Medicine Center, which is accredited by the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine (DGSM).

Scientific contribution

Ficker's scientific work initially concentrated on the area of sleep-related breathing disorders. Here, studies were carried out on the further development of nasal positive pressure therapy with continuous recording of the upper airway resistance through forced oscilloresistometry during CPAP therapy and the development of an auto-CPAP system based on it. This research resulted in a commercially available Auto-CPAP system.

In addition, Ficker conducted studies on the relationship between sleep-disordered breathing and diabetes mellitus . Fundamental works were created, which u. a. have shown that CPAP therapy for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome , the insulin sensitivity can in just two nights significantly improve.

Since 2003 there has been a large number of clinical studies on the bronchoscopic interventional therapy of pulmonary emphysema with valves, but also with steam. These studies contributed to the fact that bronchoscopic lung volume reduction with valves in heterogeneous emphysema without collateral ventilation is now included in international guidelines .

In recent years, international studies have been carried out on the effectiveness of substitution therapy in alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency- associated pulmonary emphysema, which, on the basis of computed tomography measurement of lung density, provide clear evidence of the effectiveness of the maintenance of lung structure through alpha-1-antitrypsin substitution therapy could.

In addition to his research activities, Ficker made contributions to scientific research as a co-editor and reviewer for various medical journals such as pulmonology, as an organizer of specialist congresses and as a commission member z. B. for the German S3 guideline for the diagnosis and therapy of lung cancer and the S3 guideline for the diagnosis and therapy of sleep-related breathing disorders.

During the so-called “first wave” of the Sars-Cov-2 pandemic , he operated a podcast (“Corona consultation hour”) together with a local radio station, in which he explained current scientific and practical questions about the corona pandemic on a weekly basis.

Memberships (selection)

Ficker is a member of various national and international scientific associations. These include the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS). In 2012 he was a board member and congress president of the German Society for Pneumology (DGP). In 2018 he was Congress President and board member of the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine (DGSM)
