from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joachim Herz (born August 25, 1941 ; † May 31, 2008 in Atlanta , Georgia , USA ) was a German entrepreneur ; he owned 15% of the shares in Tchibo Holding AG (since 2007: Maxingvest) , which holds the majority in both Tchibo GmbH and Beiersdorf AG . He had no children; since his death his fortune has been held by the Joachim Herz Foundation .

Career

Joachim Herz was the second oldest son of the Tchibo founder Max, who died in 1965, and his wife Ingeburg Herz . While his brother Günter Herz ran the company, Joachim Herz dealt with general economic issues. The siblings, who are among the richest Germans, disagreed about the direction of the company. In 2004, Joachim Herz was against the fact that his siblings Günter and Daniela Herz were paid out with around four billion euros and have not been involved in the company's ownership since then. In 2007 he signed over to Karl-Walter Freitag shares, making him the first shareholder outside of the Herz family.

In 1981 he met his second wife Petra Herz , whom he married in 1984. She headed the foundation named after him as a board member until March 1, 2016 and then moved to the honorary chairmanship. Together with her, Joachim Herz developed the concept of the Joachim Herz Foundation , which was founded on July 24, 2008, eight weeks after his death. In 2008, the financial basis of the foundation's assets was around 1.3 billion euros. This primarily includes a stake in Beiersdorf AG . At the time of his death, Joachim Herz was ranked 368th on the Forbes Fortune Top 500 list of the richest people in the world, and 34th of the richest Germans .

Joachim Herz lived in Hamburg and on a farm near Atlanta, Georgia. He acquired over 1,000 acres of land in Newton County. He had a flight and helicopter license, was an active sailor and swimmer. While swimming off the pool in the main canal of the Lake Rabun reservoir near Atlanta, about a hundred miles north of his American residence at Little Springs Farm in Covington, Georgia , he was run over by a water-ski pleasure boat and injured so badly that he was died of the consequences. The boat operator, a 43-year-old from Forsyth, Georgia , was neither drunk nor too fast. So the cause of death is due to a tragic accident.
