Life

Joachim Engels studied chemistry between 1964 and 1968 at the Free University of Berlin , at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the University of Regensburg , where he also completed his doctorate in 1972 . After a postdoctoral stay at Stanford University with Eugene van Tamelen , Engels moved to the University of Konstanz in 1973 and worked there in the field of nucleotide chemistry on his habilitation , which he completed in 1979. After completing his habilitation, he went back to the USA with Marvin H. Caruthers at the University of Colorado . From 1982 onwards, Engels headed a DNA synthesis group at Hoechst AG in Frankfurt.

In 1985 he accepted a call to the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , where he held a C4 professorship for bioorganic chemistry from 1993 until his retirement in 2011 . In 2012 he was appointed senior professor.

Joachim Engels was married and the father of three children.

Act

Engels' research interest was predominantly in nucleotide chemistry; in particular the synthesis of modified oligonucleotides and their analysis and possible therapeutic applications as well as the function of parvulustat and tendamistat. Joachim Engels has written over 300 scientific publications and patents. Together with Friedrich Lottspeich, he was the editor of a textbook on bioanalytics in German and English.

Joachim Engels was founder and from 2001 to 2007 spokesman of the Collaborative Research Center 579 "RNA-Ligand Interactions" of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and from 2005 to 2006 President of the International Society of Nucleotides and Nucleic Acids (IS3NA) .

He has held several visiting professorships, including at the Chiba Institute , Japan 1989; at Hokkaido University , Japan 1998; from Shandong University , China 2004; from Cadi Ayyad University , Morocco 2010 and from the University of the Witwatersrand , South Africa 2012.

In 2013 he was elected President of the Scientific Society at Goethe University and held this position until his death.
